I'm proud to support this initiative to fund Broomfield Housing Alliance. My reasons are simple. Working-class people deserve safe, stable housing as much as anyone else. In the wealthiest country in the history of the world, we have no excuse to neglect our low-income neighbors. And attainable housing vital for the economic well-being of our city. With Broomfield's median home price near $600,000, we've priced out the essential workers who keep our community running: home care aides, preschool teachers, firefighters, and so many others. If we want these roles filled today and in the future, we have to invest in housing people can actually afford. This is a smart, visitor-funded way to do it, without raising property or sales taxes on residents.

Housing is an important part of a community's infrastructure. This funding could be leveraged to preserve existing affordable housing, help keep seniors in their homes and provide support for the most vulnerable among us. This will help to preserve the strength of the Broomfield community.
Flatirons Habitat for Humanity
Flatirons Habitat for Humanity endorses Check-In for Housing because Broomfield’s continued prosperity depends on people who work, serve, and raise families here being able to afford to live here. Increasing the lodging tax to 6% would create a dedicated, locally controlled source of funding for affordable housing while still leaving Broomfield with the region’s lowest lodging tax. This is a practical and responsible investment that asks visitors to make a modest contribution toward the strength of the community they enjoy. No single organization can solve the housing crisis alone. Check-In for Housing gives Broomfield an essential tool to create and preserve housing opportunities for years to come.

Since 2019, housing and economic opportunity have been priorities for Broomfield. When I helped create the Broomfield Housing Alliance and led the Housing Solutions Forum team, we have been looking for sustainable ways to reach a specific income-aligned workforce housing target of those who earn 60% (or less) of our average income, without touching our general fund. Teachers, nurses, first responders, and other service providers need an equitable place to live where they work and aligns with their pay. A thriving community is one where the people who serve it can afford to call it home.
Now is the time to recalibrate with a reasonable regional-matching lodging tax that creates a sustainable, responsible funding source for our BHA to steward wisely. By investing the resources generated by visitors back into our community, we can strengthen our local small businesses, build a thriving and resilient community, and create opportunities for our own children and grandchildren to stay, grow, and invest in the place they call home.

As both a resident of Broomfield and through my work at Broomfield FISH, I see the housing crisis first hand in the faces of neighbors who struggle. The housing crisis is truly a crisis--like a flood or a fire-- with desperate families on the brink of eviction, or worse, already living in their cars or on the street. The shortage of income-aligned units in our community, combined with rising costs of rent, make it nearly impossible for low income residents to make ends meet. Simply put, I support the Check-In for Housing Campaign because it will offer real help to real people! The lodging tax has not been increased since 1997 and bringing it up to 6% will create sustainable revenue to support critical housing programs and services.
